What is WIC?

WIC program is a federally-funded health and supplemental nutrition program that helps families buy healthy foods from WIC-authorized vendors.

Pregnant or postpartum women and children up to age five that receive Medi-Cal automatically qualify for WIC services. The income guidelines for eligibility are very generous for those families not receiving Medi-Cal.

The goal of the WIC Program is to improve the health of women, infants and children during critical times of development through nutrition education, breast feeding promotion and support, medical and dental care referrals, and specific supplemental nutritious foods which are high in protein and iron.

WIC is also tailored to accommodate lactose intolerant needs as well as specialty formulas for high risk infant needs.

WIC also offers appointments with a Registered Dietitian to increase awareness and enhance dietary needs for specific challenges with respect to anemia, asthma, baby bottle tooth decay, gastronomic problems, low birth weight infants, overweight children, gestational diabetes, and inadequate or inappropriate feeding practices.

Parents receive informational materials about their children's health, safety, learning and development.
